Hello! My name is Karen Chernyaev. I've worked in publishing for more than thirty years, starting out as a photo editor and writer for a children's book publishing company and eventually graduating to senior acquisitions editor for a midsized publisher. I've spent my entire career writing and editing books, book proposals, op-eds, articles, newsletters, blogs, and more. I specialize in nonfiction books on topics related to health, wellness, addiction and recovery, diet, self-help, spirituality, and general psychology. My work has been published by The Experiment, Hachette, HarperBusiness, Hay House, Hazelden, Rodale, Sounds True, and more. To date, I have collaborated on two New York Times bestsellers: The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown and Fascinate by Sally Hogshead. I am the author, cowriter, or ghostwriter of more than thirty books.
I grew up in a duplex in Metro Detroit. I grew up in a duplex in Metro Detroit. In the third grade, I loved to write short stories and post them on the back of the kitchen door, hoping the upstairs tenants and anyone who stopped by would read them. At age ten, I begged my father for a rolltop desk from Montgomery Ward. He eventually broke down and bought it for me. I spent many hours at that desk writing stories in longhand and doing my homework by candlelight. (Yes, I was slightly peculiar.)
I now rely on a glass-top desk, a large-screen computer, and high-speed internet, but I still work by candlelight. Whether you are a first-time or a best-selling author, I do my best to understand your needs and goals, write or edit to your style, and help to produce the best manuscript possible. I don't take feedback personally. And I'm always learning from my clients.
